“Xin’s control, vocal authority and astonishing communicative ability created a haunting, indelible impression.”-The Vancouver Sun(2008)
Nanguan is a form of traditional music, a pearl of Chinese music heritage. Its origin dates back to 7th century in Quangzhou, Fujian province and preserved many archaic cultural features. Nanguan music is unique in its slow, delicate and persuasive depiction of emotions, especially through the high pitch singing style.
Forlorn- a Rhyming Song for Lovers was the lyric written by lyricist LI Qingzhao of the Song dynasty. This brand new production is the sequel to the nanguan & literature series after The Pipa Tune and Song of Flower-Burial from Xin Xin Nanguan Ensemble. LI Qingzhao, who lived in the 11th century, was most known for her depiction of sentimental feeling in the routine of daily life and the lamenting after her country was destroyed in war. All the feelings and observations became the jewels in her lyrics which are beautifully matched with the rhyme. With the pause between beats, you would feel the aesthetic of our traditional culture. Forlorn- a Rhyming Song for Lovers fully expresses unique cultural character of nanguan music.
WANG Xin Xin successfully recreates the classics of Chinese literature with the nanguan instruments and her own voice; in the concert you will hear not just excellent music but also the essence of Chinese traditional art.
